Dr. Cunningham's Education and Qualifications

Detailed below are my education and qualifications including sports medicine fellowship specialty training and board certification. I have been board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1998, and I have just been recertified through 2018, scoring in the 92nd percentile on the recertifying examination. Feel free to look up my name on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons website, www.aaos.org, and on the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery site, www.abos.org. These sites list orthopaedic surgeons in good standing who are also board certified in the specialty. I have also passed the exam and obtained subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine given by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. This new certification examination requires passing a Sports Medicine examination along with performing at least 125 Sports Medicine surgeries per year. In addition, there is a peer review process required before you can take the exam.

Undergraduate Education

I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in 1986. I obtained a B.S. in Chemistry and was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma honor society.

Medical School

I completed medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, now known as Virginia Commonwealth school of medicine in 1990. I was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the Medical Honor Society.

Orthopaedic Residency

My orthopaedic residency was completed at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in 1995. This provided extensive training in all areas of orthopaedics and served as a tremendous foundation for my subsequent practice.

Sports Medicine Fellowship

Due to my desire to obtain more extensive sports medicine training, I completed a one year fellowship in Miami, Florida, under the direction of Harlan Selesnick, MD. This provided extensive training in sports injury treatment including state of the art arthroscopic techniques. I treated athletes from school age to professional as we were team physicians for the NBA's Miami Heat. The Miami Sports Medicine fellowship is one of only a few to be accredited by both the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). You may check both websites to look up this information at www.aana.org and www.acgme.org
